LASIK (Laser Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis)

&

 W-ASA (Wavefront Advanced Surface Ablation)

What is the difference between LASIK and W-ASA?

With LASIK, the middle portion of the cornea is treated by first using a machine called a microkeratome to cut and lift the top surface of the cornea. The laser is then used to reshape the exposed corneal surface.

With W-ASA, or wavefront advanced surface ablation, the laser light only is used to reshape the front surface of the eye, without cutting the top surface of the eye. Both procedures can be used to correct near sightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Surface ablation has been performed in this country for about fifteen years, and LASIK for about eight years. Dr. Palumbo became a Summit Technology Visionary when he traveled internationally in 1990 to initiate his research with Laser Vision Correction.
